Vincent Belorgey built a version of himself that could not die. He called it Kavinsky, a driver who crashed his Testarossa in 1986 and came back as a zombie to make music, a fiction he maintained so completely that showing his own face never interested him. He recorded his first EP on a vintage Yamaha DX7, toured with Daft Punk, and in 2010 released "Nightcall," a song built from longing and static that found a second life a year later as the opening of "Drive." It became the sound of driving alone at night for an entire generation who had never heard of him. In 2024 he stood on stage at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics, in his own country, in front of the world, and performed the song that had spent fourteen years traveling further than he ever expected it to. He died in Paris at 50, and the character he built to outlive a car crash has, in its way, done exactly that.
