Why I built Frisson

I was six when the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto got into me, the old Heifetz recording. I was a kid at a piano, years away from being able to explain why it moved me. It went in anyway, and it stayed.

I'm a classically trained pianist. I studied at Berklee College of Music, and I DJ and produce as J-KIND. I have spent my life thinking about music analytically, and still, certain pieces do something to my body that I can't think my way out of. The hair stands up. The chest tightens. I've felt it alone at the piano, and I've felt it in a crowd at the Zoo Project in Ibiza when Sven Väth dropped “More Times” by Octo Octa and the entire place went nuts.

That shiver has a name: frisson. What I couldn't stop thinking about is how specific it is. It happens with one piece, or a handful, and when people try to explain why, they stop describing the music and start describing themselves.

I built Frisson to give that a shape. Not a playlist. Not a personality quiz. Something more like a fingerprint: what you find beautiful, and why, and what that says about how you experience the world.
